For at least an hour or two before the exit even arrives, travelers along I-10 see signs asking, "The Thing? What Is It?" and warning of the upcoming "Mystery of the Desert." The reality of the attraction is, perhaps, less exciting than the signs that promote it, located in a gas station and gift shop complex just off the highway, but for the cost of only a dollar it's a great stop to take in a piece of true Americana. Sitting about 65 miles east of Tucson just off the Interstate, the rest stop is a good distance away from the city for a bit of a stretch and a tank top-off, making the visit a convenience as well as an attraction.
